Keep Calm and Meet Me in Montauk

The Key West of the Hamptons, Montauk’s long stretches of beach and dunes are washed in pastel shades of pink and deep blues at sunset. Wedged between the bay and the ocean, the lifestyle is sunny, salty and barefoot. Located at the very tip of Long Island’s South Fork, it has the fourth oldest active lighthouse in the country, six state parks, and a large commercial fishing fleet parked in the harbor that brings in fresh fish to the community and local restaurants every day. A little known fact? Montauk is the birthplace of Skishing: an extreme technique for surfcasting where fishermen don wet suits and flippers, swim out into the ocean with their rods and reels, then while they are drifting back to shore they troll for fish. Year-round residents enjoy a tight-knit community with small town values and mild weather. Vacation house owners come for peak season and fall Read More …

Katie Couric on Why House Hunting Is Like Dating

What I Love  by Joanne Kaufman, New York Times, August 26, 2016 If the real estate agent hadn’t counseled prudence, hadn’t suggested checking out a few more properties, Katie Couric would have put pen to check as soon as she saw the gray cedar-shingled seven-bedroom house in East Hampton, N.Y. “I do think there’s a certain kind of chemistry between a house and an owner,” said Ms. Couric, 59, the global news anchor for Yahoo, who just started a podcast and who is the executive producer and host of a National Geographic Channel documentary on gender. “You walk in and you can kind of envision your life there. It’s like a first date. You know in the first 30 seconds. I thought, ‘This could be a nice, happy place for my family.’ ” Reader, she bought it. But the 2006 transaction was bittersweet — the end of a chapter, the Read More …

House Tour: East Hampton, $1.9M

I was amazed at the soaring ceilings and amount of daylight flooding into this big-feeling house. Roomy and thoughtfully designed— it exists all on one floor for easy living if climbing stairs is not an option. And it has a huge finished basement, as big as the footprint of the house, which is ideal for a home theater and entertainment center. It’s also tucked way back into a quiet driveway and enclosed for total privacy and peace, yet resides just on the edge of East Hampton village. For 3,200 square feet of indoor space, it would be a great value with the very minimum needed to make it your own. Take the kitchen, for example. It has beautiful counters with flecks of black. Just re-finish or replace the cabinets with black ones and set out copper pots and it would have an instant wow appeal. With an open floor plan Read More …

Book Review: At Home in the American Barn

This beautiful book from Rizzoli just emerged on the market. Having grown up in a renovated carriage barn, I felt a nostalgic pull as I turned the pages. It’s written by architect and author, James. B. Garrison and beautifully photographed by Geoffrey Gross and Brandt Bolding. With long histories of barns in America, the inspiration later comes from a series of vignettes highlighting 23 barn renovations throughout the country. Are you barn dreaming?

Five Reasons to Go to the Hamptons

By Barbara Barielle, travel, food and wine author Five Reasons to Go to The Hamptons – in the Winter East Coast playground of the rich and richer is not a place you think of for winter frolic. But, I am about to let the proverbial cat out of the bag. It’s cold. It’s quiet. Yet it is still about the beautiful people. There are just fewer of them and the January frost is a great equalizer. People are nicer and everyone wants to share what’s happening. Until two weeks ago, I had only been to The Hamptons in the summer and basically hung at the beaches in Easthampton and Amagansett. In January, there is still beach and it is gorgeous, but a brief glance is enough. We got to Bridgehampton to do a friend’s cookbook shoot. This was Hillary Davis’ fourth cookbook on France and she had decided to shoot Read More …
